The Heather Payne Memorial scholarship was founded with the mission of driving more awareness and community action for bereaved family members dealing with loss of a sibling by suicide.

  • The background.

    Those that have experienced loss of a family member by suicide experience, on average, higher rates severe mental health complications (eg. depression, anxiety, PTSD), suicide, impairment in social and employment settings, and other issues (eg. loss of weight due to eating disorders).

  • The application.

    The Heather Payne Memorial Scholarship provides scholarships starting at $1.5k each year to two select high school or recent undergraduate applicants who have lost a sibling due to suicide. Applications can be submitted via Bold.org. The application deadline for 2022 is Aug 1, 2022.

Background on fund

Research has shown that those that have experienced loss of a family member by suicide experience, on average, higher rates (~25%+) of:

  • Severe mental health complications (eg. depression, anxiety, PTSD)

  • Suicide

  • Impairment in social and employment settings

  • Physical reactions (eg. loss of weight due to eating disorders)

With all that weighs on family members who are grieving, how to pay for education shouldn’t even be a consideration.

The Heather Payne Memorial Scholarship was created in 2022 by the Mancillas family (San Diego, CA) to support those who lost a sibling to suicide - empowering them to continue to drive towards, and achieve, their educational dreams.

How can I apply for the scholarship?

2022 application deadline is August 1, 2022. Recipients of the scholarship will be announced August 31, 2022.
